The Elk City News SATURDAY, JANUARY 24, 2026 • 9 SPORTS Professional Team Sports By Alex Alvarez NFL: Last weekend the Divisional Semifinal playoffs took place with four games, the first and last of which were great games that went to overtime. First, the Denver Broncos, seeded #1, hosted the Buffalo Bills, their archrivals, in a great game that went to overtime at Mile High Stadium. The first quarter finished with Buffalo ahead 7-3. In the second quarter, Denver went ahead 10-7 with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Frank Crum. The Bills responded with a field goal to tie the game 1010, before the Broncos 17-10 with a rushing touchdown by Creed Humphrey then the Broncos took a 10-point lead 20-10 with a couple of seconds before half time. On the 2nd half, the Broncos took a 13-point lead with another field goal to go ahead 23-10. But Buffalo began a comeback that after a 10-yard touchdown by Keon Coleman. After forcing a punt, Josh Allen connected with Dalton Kincaid for a 14-yard touchdown that gave the Bills a 24-23 lead. After the Bills forced another punt, they took their lead to 27-23 with a field goal with 4:11 left in the game. Denver responded with a touchdown with 1:01 left in the game to take the lead 30-27, which gave the Bills only 61 seconds to either tie the game or win it. They were able to tie the game with a field goal with 5 seconds left and into overtime period marred with controversies. First, both teams failed to score in their first possession which was now a game in whoever scored first would win. Bills had the ball, and what looked like a catch or a dropped pass at Denver’s 27 yards line, with the offensive player and defensive player rolling over each other, it was ruled an interception since during the rollover Denver ended up with the ball, just seconds later, Tre’Davious White was called on a pass interference twice for 55-yards in total gains for Denver, that gave Denver great field position for a field goal that won the game 33-30. The other overtime game was on Sunday between the hosting Chicago Bears who were seeded #2, and the visiting Los Angeles Rams. In this back-and-forth game, Los Angeles took the first lead with 4-yard rush touchdown by Kyren Williams, Chicago took the lead with a touchdown catch by Deniston Moore and a field goal. As time expired in the third quarter, Los Angeles tied the game with a field goal. With 8:50 in the final quarter, Los Angeles took the lead with a rushing touchdown by Kyren Williams. With only 18 second left, Caleb Williams miraculous pass to Cole Kmet tied the game, which went into overtime. Again, no scores in first possession, and a field goal by Los Angeles won the game with 3:19 left in the first overtime, not before stalling a resurgent Caleb Williams’ great plays that resulted in dropped passes by his receivers. The other two games were not as exciting, as the New England Patriots had a solid win against the Houston Texans 28-16 and the Seattle Seahawks ran all over the San Francisco 49ers giving them their worst playoff loss ever with a score of 41-6. On Sunday, January 25th, Seahawks will host Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship game and Denver will host the New England Patriots for the AFC Championship game. Winners, of course, will go to the Superbowl on February 8. Denver will be without Bo Nix, their starting quarterback who got hurt in the closing minutes of the game versus the Bills.
