SPORTS/EDU * October 28, 2020 Oilers tumble to Thomas COACHES CORNER 20 By Kerry Hookstra Bearcat Coaches Corner Basketball season opener set for Nov. 3 as Erick hosts Canute. The Lady Bearcats scrimmage Leedey with just the high school Oct. 29. One more scrimmage for the Bearcats is desired since they lost one earlier but that is still in the works. According to Lady Bearcat Head Basketball Coach Justin Janz, We were ups and down last week. The Tuesday scrimmage was better than Thursday. The team is still struggling shooting the ball consistently. We have to get some flow with our shoot- ing. Our aggressiveness is there and we just need to develop confidence in our shooting. I thought the junior high looked fairly decent in scrimmages. They are limited at time due to the freshmen playing high school ball and really being young. I can live with that considering how hard they are competing right now.” “Our scrimmage with Navajo went well. The junior high had no problems since they were missing some players. High school was competitive but we won a few more quarters overall. I would love to find one more scrimmage to make up for one we missed but that is an ongoing search,” said Bearcat Head Basketball Coach Jace Newcomb. Eagle Coaches Corner ‘The trip to Burns Flat was not pleasant for Sayre as a fully healthy BEDC crew had too much fire power for the Eagles. Life is no easier this week as Texhoma comes to town Oct. 30 with a typically talented squad. Lady Eagle Basketball is in the gym but the scrimmage at Duke Oct. 22 with Cyril was canceled due to the Lady Tiger Head Coach being hospitalized with the virus. A scrimmage with Granite was set for Oct. 26 but winter weather took out school. “The Burns Flat-Dill City team is a good crew. They got some guys back with helped them but hurt us especially in the pass- ing game. Texhoma’s Red Devils are always good and they have a long string of playoff appearances. They take their football very seriously and their program is very similar to Thomas in fielding consistently good teams. Even when they are down they are good,” noted Eagle Head Football Coach Jason Bohan- non, Lady Eagle Head Basketball Coach Brian Richardson notes, “We hated to lose the scrimmage at Duke but it is good to hear that their coach came home Saturday. Our scrimmage schedule added Altus Nov. 19 and we have moved the BFDC regular sea- son game to Jan. 30 due to the extra week of football playoffs. Our team is looking good offensively. We have the ability to put points on the board if we are playing our game.” Elk Coaches Corner Cross country ran at Regional Oct. 24 with the Big Elks plac- ing fourth and qualifying for State Oct. 31 at Edmond Santa Fe, Matti Jones made the meet as an individual runner for the Elkettes. Football is set to see action Oct. 30 with Clinton com- ing to town. Elkette Basketball has good numbers with about 25 for high school and 20 or so in 7th and 8th grades. They scrimmaged Navajo in Elk City Oct. 22. “We are ready to get back in pads and prepare for Clinton. ‘This is a home game and we feel good about things. The players definitely have developed confidence in themselves and their teammates which really helps all around,” indicated Big Elk Head Coach Dave Meadows. “Regional was somewhat disappointing for our girls. We were two spots away from making State as a team. They boys are excited and hope for a top 10 finish. Mason Smith looks at this week as extra time to prepare and plan his running strat- egy. He went out too fast in the first mile and ran out of gas. Likely he will not make that mistake again,” indicated Elk City Head Cross Country Coach Jim Taylor. Oiler Coaches Corner Cross country ran in Regional Oct. 24 at Waurika and both teams qualified for State at Edmond Santa Fe Oct. 31. The Oilerettes took second in Regional while the Oilers were sixth with the top seven teams advancing. Riley Herndon was the individual champion and Breegan Barnett took third in the girls’ meet.
